Michael Horyczun ’81 (CLAS) has been named Director of Communications for New Canaan Public Schools in New Canaan, Conn. In this position, he is responsible for developing and implementing the communication plan for the Board of Education and administration in one of the nation’s leading K-12 public school districts.

Heidi (Forrest) Henaire ’02 MSW and Kristopher Henaire ’03 (CLAS), ’16 MBA announce the birth of their daughter, Ella Grace. She joins two year old brother Colton. Heidi works for the State of Connecticut as an Education Consultant and Coordinator for Deaf Services and Kris is Director of College Counseling at Chase Collegiate School in Waterbury.

Renee (Christopher) Deemy ’04 (CLAS) and Gregory Deemy ’04 (CLAS) are pleased to announce the birth of their daughter, Riley Kate, on January 30, 2017. Riley joins her big brother, Tyler, as a big fan of Husky basketball. Mom & dad hope they will both become future Husky’s!

John Surowiecki ’66 (CLAS), ’76 MA

After twelve authoring twelve books of poetry, John Surowiecki ’66 (CLAS), ’76 MA has published his first novel, Pie Man. The novel, which takes place in a working-class neighborhood in a small city in central Connecticut, was awarded the Nilsen Literary Prize for a First Novel. The publisher is the Southeast Missouri State University Press.

Shana (Morales) Shea ’10 (CLAS) and Kenneth Shea ’12 (CLAS), ’15 JD were married August 26, 2017 in Waterbury, Conn. Their officiant was Patrick Whalen ’11 (CLAS).

Phillip Champagne ’06 (CAHNR) and Krystal (Hawks) Champagne ’06 (CLAS)

Phillip Champagne ’06 (CAHNR) and Krystal (Hawks) Champagne ’06 (CLAS) welcomed their first child on July 22, 2017. Julian Phillippe Champagne weighed 7 lbs, 12 oz and measured 19 3/4″ long. The family resides in North Branford, Conn.

On July 15, 2017 Lauren Bucknam ’10 (CLAS) and Conor Gereg celebrated their wedding day with fellow UConn grads: Emily Demasi, Jenny Hall, Julie Maas, Matthew Santacroce, Kristin Geissler, Kimberly Gentile, Alyse Lofman, Lauren Kandel, Jasmine Van Wattum.

Paul Valenti ’90 (CLAS)

Paul Valenti ’90 (CLAS), Director of Human Rights for Pinellas County, Fla., was elected as Member of the Board and Southern Region Representative to the International Association of Official Human Rights Agencies (IAOHRA) at its annual conference in Seattle in September. As Southern Region Representative, he represents state and local civil and human rights law enforcement agencies in the states of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia which are IAOHRA members.

Rob Carolla ’94 (CLAS)

Rob Carolla ’94 (CLAS) has been named Director of Communications for the College Football 150th Anniversary celebration. He has over 20 years of administrative experience working in collegiate sports and currently serves as President of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) – the national organization of strategic communicators for college athletics.

Dr. Steven Stack ’69 (CLAS), ’70 MA, ’73 MA, ’76 Ph.D

Dr. Steven Stack ’69 (CLAS), ’70 MA, ’73 MA, ’76 Ph.D received the Stengel Award for outstanding research on suicide. The award is given by the International Association for Suicide Prevention since 1977. Stack is the first sociologist to receive this award, the world’s most prestigious research award in the field of suicide studies.
