Criteria for Adding Names to the Roll of Honor

The Ultimate Sacrifice Memorial
The Roll of Honor on display in the Alumni Center will be updated annually during Alumni Weekend in June. Until added to the permanent Roll, additional names will be framed for display as seen in the photograph above. Below is a close up view of the display.
The Ultimate Sacrifice Memorial

The Memorial Committee has sought help in gathering names from all wars and conflicts in which the United States has been engaged since the founding of the University as Storrs Agricultural School in 1881. That effort continues and as additional names are submitted and verified, the Roll of Honor on display at the Alumni Center will be updated annually.

While on the surface it would seem that adding a name would be easy, it has become clear to the members of the Memorial Committee that this is not always the case. Each name must be verified, and that requires reviewing the nominee's status as a University of Connecticut student as well as details of his or her service in the armed forces.

A goal of the Memorial Committee is to be inclusive and to respect the memory of the fallen and their descendents while maintaining the integrity of the purpose of the Roll of Honor.

The criteria for determining a nominee's inclusion in the Roll of Honor is drawn from the University of Connecticut Alumni Association Constitution and By-Laws regarding membership in the UCAA, specifically Article III. Membership, Item 1 of the Constitution and Article I. Membership, Section 1 of the By-Laws. The constitution and by-laws are available online.

In summary, to be included in the Roll of Honor, an individual must have completed at least one semester of academic work at the University. However, exceptions to the criteria will be considered by the Veteran's Memorial Committee of the University of Connecticut Alumni Association on a case-by-case basis. For example, a number of those on the Roll of Honor left their studies before completing their first semester after either being drafted or enlisting in the armed services during time of war. As noted above, it is the intent of the committee to be inclusive.
