Dr. Louise S. Berry, the Superintendent of the Brooklyn, CT Schools, has been selected to receive the prestigious Outstanding Superintendent Award from the Neag School of Education Alumni Society of the University of Connecticut. Dr. Berry received B.A. (1952), M.A. (1961) and J.D. (1980) degrees from the University of Connecticut. She is a highly regarded professional in educational circles throughout Connecticut. Dr. Berry is admired by her colleagues for her dedication, loyalty and humility. She is a district leader, a leader in her profession and a trusted colleague. In his letter of nomination Mark Shibles states that Louise "has developed a school organization that engages people at all levels of policy making and implementation, has been a leader in developing collaborative relationships with agencies that are concerned with the welfare of children, and has provided a clear sense of purpose and vision." Dr. Berry has served as superintendent of the Brooklyn School District for twenty-seven years. She began her career as a school nurse in the Killingly Schools. She also served as school nurse and Director of Guidance in the Brooklyn School. In 1982 she was appointed Superintendent of the Brooklyn School. She has always held major leadership positions. She served in the Connecticut State Senate and was on the University of Connecticut Board of Trustees from 1993 to 2001. She has also served on the Board of Trustees for the Community Technical Colleges of Connecticut since 1991 and is presently chairperson of that board. She was President of the UConn Alumni Association from 1992 to 1993. Dr. Berry has a long list of significant citations for her public service activities. In 1977 the Killingly – Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce presented her with the Civic Achievement Award. In 1995 she received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the UConn Alumni Association. She was again honored in 2002 with the University Service Award. In 2001 she received the Excellence in Educational Leadership Award from the University Council for Educational Administration and was presented with the Northeast Connecticut Superintendents' Association's President's Award in 2004. Dr. Berry will be recognized at the Eleventh Annual Awards Dinner of the Neag School of Education on Saturday, May 16, 2009.
