The Rock Stories - Kim Donovan '79 |

I had the great privilege of painting The Rock not once but TWICE during my time as a student. During my undergrad search for a career, I tried ROTC on for size. While that didn't take, I did pledge the Pershing Rifles. On my pledge Hell Night, along with the Scavenger Hunt for Strange Things and Impossible Items (never did manage the bucket of steam) we got to paint the rock. My pledge brothers and sisters put the base coat on a very wet rock, as our early AM paint job was at least its second coat for the night. Because of my calligraphy talents, I painted on our insignia. The following year when, as a “brother”, I sponsored a pledge, I was asked to provide the same calligraphic service. It remains an extremely vivid and wonderful memory. I only regret that, as poor students, none of us owned a camera at the time.
